Candide by Voltaire ★★★★ “Optimism," said Cacambo, "What is that?" "Alas!" replied Candide, "It is the obstinacy of maintaining that everything is best when it is worst.” “But for what purpose was the earth formed?" asked Candide. "To drive us mad," replied Martin.” “If this is the best of possible worlds, what then are the others?” “Even in those cities which seem to enjoy the blessings of peace, and where the arts flourish, the inhabitants are devoured by envy, cares and anxieties, which are greater plagues than any experienced in a town when it is under siege.” This was the best book I have ever been required to read for school. That's not saying much, but I was also required to read The Great Gatsby last year, so it's actually a pretty high standard. Honestly, Voltaire is a complete savage. He satirizes everything from war and the mindlessness of soldiers to mankind's ignorance and belief in free will and the hypocrisy of religion and puppy love and his own contemporary philosopher rivals. I can imagine him as one of those brutally honest friends whose dry humor would probably cost him a couple of sensitive friends. Good for him. Candide is this innocent character who traverses across the globe, meets (and re-meets) a couple of friends, and tries to justify all the wrongs in the world with the idea that everything happens for a reason. His life is ridiculously funny, and you smile just because of the fact that you don't have to endure it. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury ★★★★ "Stuff your eyes with wonder," he said, "live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories." "If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you'll never learn." "The good writers touch life often. The mediocre ones run a quick hand over her. The bad ones rape her and leave her for the flies." “Fiction is a lie that tells us true things, over and over.” - Gaiman I can't really imagine what it would be like to read Bradbury's cautionary tale without Gaiman's introduction to frame my mindset going into Montag's (the protagonist) world. Although this is a dystopian society envisioned in the 1950s, in which the Cold War ran rampant and communism loomed over Americans' heads, fears of censorship, the displacement of humans by technology, and willful ignorance are evermore present in today's world. It was an interesting idea to first imagine a past and then a future from within that past. Even more interesting, and always important, is the reminder to care, to think, to appreciate, to speak up and live life with empathy. The motifs and juxtaposing symbolism of fire and water were an AP Lit teacher's wet dream, and although I felt like some descriptions were a little flowery and some predictions were a little too dismal for my taste, for the most part, it was a pleasure to read. Initially, I had trouble getting into the long symbolic descriptions, but it revolved around a lot of questions I often think about -- what is the purpose of thinking and debating and disagreeing? What is our purpose as a society in cultivating those actions? Bradbury's satire of his own society serves to show the importance of splashing yourself with water, instead of merely sitting in the blurry smoke of a collective herd's ignorance. How's that for an analogy? BOTTOM LINE: If you like books that are often vague and largely symbolic and make you think and ponder your own life then this is for you!! (Also, if you need a book with literary merit!!) Overall, a very quotable book (you may risk coming off a tad pretentious). "Live by the harmless untruths that make you brave and kind and healthy and happy." "Americans... are forever searching for love in forms it never takes, in places it can never be. It must have something to do with the vanished frontier." Frankenstein by Mary Shelley ★★★ "Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful." "I do know that for the sympathy of one living being, I would make peace with all. I have love in me the likes of which you can scarcely imagine and rage the likes of which you would not believe. If I cannot satisfy the one, I will indulge the other." I have written enough AP Lit work on these novel to last me a lifetime. With that said, I would definitely say it's worth the high regards it has been given. "An author’s work, regardless of intention, is oftentimes a reflection of the time period in which their mindsets take form. Shelley just so happened to be writing Frankenstein amidst the budding movement of the 19th century -- Romanticism. Although the novel certainly exemplifies Romantic ideals -- the primacy of passion and intuition over logic, society’s gradual corruption of the pure and innocent child, longingness for the unattainable, and the loneliness of the misunderstood genius -- these contemporary tropes inevitably lead to every character’s destruction. Despite showcasing Romantic ideals through the very creation of Victor Frankenstein’s monster, an act grounded in passion for the natural sciences, Shelley did not necessarily like, or in some cases, agree with its principles. She recognized that like all things, be it good or bad, Romanticism should come in moderation. Throughout Frankenstein, Shelley often criticized the romanticization of passion, instead choosing to elucidate the desolation and impracticality that Romantics often forget to mention as side effects of fulfilling their so called “destiny.”" -- MY AP LIT PAPER BOTTOM LINE: It's a classic worth reading. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad ★★ “No, it is impossible; it is impossible to convey the life-sensation of any given epoch of one’s existence--that which makes its truth, its meaning--its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream--alone.” "By degrading Africa in an effort to make “normal” Europe seem better, Conrad only further substantiates the idea that the West’s “deep anxieties about the precariousness of its civilization” (Achebe 13) cause it to compare itself to an “inferior” construct of Africa it has created in an attempt to console itself. Conrad’s Heart of Darkness holds certain racist ideas, despite its original intentions of hypocritically condemning the racism of Europeans who subjugated the natives. Despite the novella being racist, one can hardly blame Conrad for ideas that were so normal to him. He was not the one who came up with a Western superiority complex, just like he was not the one who invented racism. As readers, we are propelled to study literature by our desire to reflect upon certain aspects of mankind, certain aspects of history in which we may or may not be proud of. Regardless of Conrad’s own personal racism or the ideas held in the novel, readers should learn to evaluate and respond to work even if it champions an opinion dissonant from our own. It doesn’t mean you deem these opinions appropriate or approve of them, but it allows you to learn from other’s mistakes and consider another viewpoint." -- MY AP LIT PAPER BOTTOM LINE: This book was definitely the most challenging book I have ever read. It was also mildly racist. The Nanny Diaries ★★ "If you're going to do something, darling, then do it all the way." This one was made into a movie, so I'm guessing it was a Chick-Lit hit that all the mother book clubs that meet behind picket-fenced houses raved about. Or maybe not, because they would possibly be the ones on the defensive. So maybe it would be a hit amongst anyone looking for a laugh or an easy mindless read on the beach. BOTTOM LINE: It's funny, easy to follow and lighthearted. Also, it wouldn't feel right writing them out in prose-form without the delicate drawings to go along. The book was very thoughtful in every inch of its details; I appreciate it. milk and honey reads like a soft lowercase whisper. it is reminiscent of sleepy 3am conversations where everything you have never even known you wanted to say comes spilling out. it encapsulates feelings you could never put into words. it makes you cry and feel and love and shatter and heal. it's honestly just so very beautiful, and i have never meant that word more. it makes you appreciate her and all women and all people so much more, and any book that does that deserves the world. BOTTOM LINE: I have never been one who was super into reading poetry. It all seemed a little pretentious for my liking, but ~this~ is so worth your time and love and warmth.
